The modern liberal — let us say it: the smug bourgeois — is fit only for comfort and cowardice. All his principles, ideals, values, and aversions stem therefrom.

The classical conservative - let us say it: the pompous puritan - is fit only misery and hatred of modernity. All his principles, ideals, values, and aversions stem therefrom.

no, he is fit for discernment. And not glossing over everything with stupid sophisms and platitudes, like his liberal friend. "conservative" is a symptom of his discernment, enlightenment, whatever, not some choice unto itself---as dumb Curmudgeon fogs up the 'tendencies' symptomatic of a liberal brain, by in this way speaking of liberal. That is, the same shit their proclivities stem from is what they're 'fit for'? how clumsy is that proposition. [cf. the classic heraclitus/parmenides, e.g., numbnuts, if you have doubts about certain crap surrounding "conservative", etc]
