A Regret

To my regret, I am not a man of leisure and independent means who sits all day in his dressing-gown in the morning-room of his country retreat and scribbles such little trifles as these. Rather, every day I must go to a place of work, where I am employed as a monkey performing for peanuts — for which predicament I am entirely to blame. The tedium has been relieved, however, by the opportunity to blog, for which purpose I have my note-book and the vast resources of the internet. My boss, however, has begun to notice my less than enthusiastic undertaking of the job for which I am employed, and has understandably suggested that I stay offline. So, now that I have been rumbled, with an official eye to be kept on me, blogging is going to be more difficult. I shall, of course, endeavour to continue for the sake of my sanity, but I suspect blogging will be even lighter than it is at present. Then again, the preservation of sanity might just dictate that I throw caution to the wind, that I continue as normal, and that the consequences be damned.

I hope that it won't be necessary to pull an Ilkka on us.

Deogolwulf,

If nothing else, you have been the inspiration for this.

Just keep the occasional fewtril coming to keep us on the straight and narrow - your boss cannot really object to that.

Just play it one ball at a time. We can be patient.

I'm with Dearieme on this - to a point. Telling the bstds to f-off [in diplomatic language of course] might just open up a new world of possibilities or else see you in darkest Russia. It's life defining moments like this which - well- define life.

You have verily stabbed me in my heart.

I feel quite unhappy that you must decrease your blogging frequency. Reading your blog brings joy to my day. As it would be said in idiomatic Urdu, reading your blog cools my eyes.

But I understand. Sometimes the Real World cannot be avoided.

Do as much as you can, you would like, and would be prudent. But know that I look forward to every single post, as always, whenever or however they may appear.

All, thanks for your comments. As I say, I shall try to blather on with the usual rubbish, in spite of the beady eye, though I don't know how successful I will be. No doubt I shall have to shrink the internet-window a little more, and try to look more purposeful when I play with my paper-clips. Even the keeping of a sinecure can require a little effort from time to time.

"Apply for a position in the public sector.

Job done."

Does he have the appropriate credentials? The right gender, race, religion or sexuality for the post?

Late, as usual, but I join with those who are content to wait patiently for your 'bon mots'. Perhaps, an occasional scribble in your note-book will confuse 'he-who-must-be-obeyed' but provide with the ammo to fire off in, and at, your leisure.

Surely your lunch hours are your own? One way or another, please keep up the good work.

For goodness' sake, man, apply for Arts Council funding forthwith. You are providing a much-needed public service.

On no account should you stop. I would recommend that you simply continue exactly as you are. In fact, do even less work, if possible. Your boss will fume impotently, but will not wish to go to the trouble of replacing you. On the whole, I have found, the less you do, the more people seem to value the little that you do do. As it were.

It's a sad state of affairs, but unfortunately your "Weltanschauung" doesn't qualify for state subsidy. Now, if you were to develop a Theory of Curmudgeonry or invented the "discipline" of Dyscolostical Studies, say, you could have an easy life running your own university department as a well-paid soapbox.

As Norman Douglas famously said "Always do exactly as you please and send everyone else to hell".

But perhaps not in this situation.

Keep up the good work whenever you can, it's appreciated.

Almost all my blog has been written at work. i only got internet access at home fairly recently.

i'm a secretary which means no quotas and an uneven workload. When there's little to do i get out my notebook and blog. i once spent the entire day blogging because there was no work to do.

Luckily i don't have a boss in my office - just another secretary, who takes a generally lenient view of my using the internet, because i get all the work done.

If it weren't for blogging my brain would have died long ago.
