A friend who became an academic in the 50s told me that even then the denizens of the Arts Faculty gave every sign of low morale. I suppose that they were replaced by a generation of charlatans. After all, they presumably thought,if you don't understand what it is you're meant to be doing, fake it.
They're the heirs to the tradition in the sense that maggots are the heirs to a human body.
