Specialists

“Every school in England will get a specialist Holocaust teacher to promote tolerance and combat racism”, reports The Telegraph. [1] “[T]he new expert staff members will also be encouraged to lead other lessons on multiculturalism and fighting extremism”. It is safe to presume that they will not be encouraged to fight their own ideas. “One teacher from every secondary school will be invited on a two-day course to ensure themes surrounding the Nazi genocide are treated sensitively in the classroom.” Experts after a two-day course! But then I must admit that “experts” sounds better than “ideological co-ordinators”. It is just a shame that Trevor Phillips’ Equalities and Human Rights Commission has not yet sent out its own specialists; for children could also begin to learn that social progress against racial interest can be achieved only by promoting blacks to positions of power. "the Nazi genocide"

No mention, then, of 'Uncle Joe's' efforts, or Mao's record-breaking spree in China, both of whom, when it comes to mass murder, made Hitler look like a dilettante.

I think the official line is that they are barely worth mentioning.

Last point you made, Deogolwulf - precisely.

What a semantic nightmare. In former times, we would call this coercive persuasion, yes?

Is there a league table of righteousness when it comes to mass slaughter?
How does Alexander the great or William the conqueror rank on this?
Would knocking of a lot of Iraqis count?

Mr Dude, it is hard to keep up with the changes in euphemism. I think "sensitivity-training" sounds so much nicer.

Anon, perhaps the UN keeps one. With Chinese pressure, however, I think Ghengis Khan would rank above Mao.

It’s not only schoolchildren who will have to endure the efforts of experts promoting tolerance via exquisitely-honed sensitive methods. Some exhausted adults in the autumn of their working lives (and sadly I am one of them) must attend ‘Breaking Down Barriers - an equality and diversity training event’. As a result of attending this session I am told that I will be able to “Explain why use of language is important in widening participation”, an outcome so risible that I have sent my apologies. Don’t know whether I’ll get away with it but in the meantime I am happy to forgo the pleasures of a PowerPoint presentation and curiously-spelt handouts in Comic Sans, both of which would test my limits of tolerance to their utmost.

"the pleasures of a PowerPoint presentation and curiously-spelt handouts in Comic Sans"

I know these pleasures: they feel oddly like the pangs of despair.

Perhaps these lessons will contrast the painstaking archaeological efforts undertaken in Bosnia and Iraq to uncover mass graves and identify the victims with the 60+ year delay in doing any such thing anywhere in eastern Europe.

Or perhaps not. Its not like Jewish people have the political or economic clout to get such a thing done.
